When things change in Washington

Life in today’s world can be scary for sure.  Sometimes the news is downright confusing and it’s easy to wonder what is going on in the world.

Strong words by a President or other elected official can seem overwhelming.  It can seem like our country is out of control, and maybe it is, but more than likely things are moving the way they are supposed to.

Government is about politics and politics is sometimes about arguing your point between two opposing parties.  You hope that the two parties on opposite side of an issue will respect each other, but sometimes that is not the case.

What I hope you can take away from all of this turbulence in the news is that the system is actually working the way it is supposed to – maybe just a little louder than we care to have it.

As you guys know, our government is made up of three co-equal branches of government.  Each branch has a system of checks and balances over the others to make it all work – which is exactly the way our brilliant founding fathers wanted it to.  We would all just hope that there is some civility in the conversations.

Governance in the US is supposed to be noisy and turbulent.  Even with all the yelling, screaming, noise, and bumpiness… In the end, our system is the best in the world.  I mean nowhere else in the world is there a peaceful change of power every four years.  In other parts of the world, this leads to war.

So, unless it gets really weird, this is the way that government works.  We just need to keep it all in perspective.

I love you, Dad
